Right, on Saturday morning (10/03/2018) I weighed in at 146.6kgs This is down a little bit since last year when I touched the 150kg mark a few time, but only just down.
Well Friday night my sister in South Africa told me that they’re on their way to the Argus in Cape Town (the world’s largest individually timed cycle race), which her husband takes part in every year. So, spur of the moment I jumped on Trade Me and bought myself a cheapy “Giant Roam 1” bike and decided to get back into cycling.
Setback number 1
Collected the bike on Saturday and while I had checked frame sizes on the Giant website before buying, I must have gotten it wrong because this bike was clearly too small for me. Fortunately I was able to sell that bike immediately for the same price as I paid for it and now I’m dealing with a local bike shop to buy a new bike instead. I don’t like buying cars or bikes new if I can avoid it, but for me it’s pretty important to get the size right as I’ve struggled with a too small frame before and it spoils cycling for me. Guy at the bike shop recommended a Marin Muirwoods for me and they’ve ordered an XL for me to try out. It’s not going to win any races and I might want to replace it in a few years if I continue riding, but it gets me on the road at a reasonable price.
My idea is to start cycling to work as soon as I can. It’s only 7-8 kms, but with some rolling hills and my extremely unfit state, I might have to work up to being able to do that! I have the TomTom Spark 3 smartwatch and it tells me “you are less fit than 80% of men your age”, so I really am starting at the bottom.

I am very impressed. But I can see that it will have to be hard work on your side Strength I wish you!!!
